In the aviation industry, we love to say that safety comes first. We audit maintenance, track pilot hours, and double-check weather reports. Yet, there is a silent, systemic risk hiding right inside the flight operations department of many smaller carriers: flawed AHM560 and AHM565 documentation.

 

Large airlines have dedicated teams of weight and balance engineers to ensure these documents are flawless. Smaller carriers rarely have that luxury. Instead, the task of composing the AHM560 or AHM565 often falls onto the shoulders of a busy Chief Pilot or Chief Flight Dispatcher.

 

While these professionals are excellent at their primary jobs, they are rarely specialized data engineers.   • Screenshot Shortcuts: I routinely see documents containing low-resolution screenshots pasted straight from old weight and balance manuals. For anyone trying to digitize or extract this data into modern flight planning systems, it is an absolute nightmare.

 

  1. Corrupted Calculations (The Data Nightmare)

Even if the format looks acceptable, the data inside is often fundamentally broken. The root causes vary:

  • Unquestioned Inputs: Someone received bad data from an external source and copied it blindly without verifying it.
  • Human Error: Simple typos or basic manual calculation mistakes.
  • Broken Logic: A hidden Excel formula got corrupted, silently spitting out flawed outputs that went completely unnoticed during review.

 

Seeing the Chaos: My Solution

Bad data can be hard to spot in a sea of numbers. That is exactly why I built my own proprietary calculation and data visualization tools.

 

These tools allow me to run data backwards and forwards. I can perform reverse calculations to stress-test the math. Most importantly, I visualize the data.

 

When you plot weight, balance, and trim limits visually, the truth comes out instantly. A correct data set looks clean, logical, and safe. A flawed data set looks like a nightmare painted by a drunk Picasso. If the graph looks deformed, the numbers are wrong. Period.
