The Power of Deep Data Analysis: Why Visualization and Reverse Calculations Save the Day   Data is the backbone of aviation safety and efficiency. Here is why deep data analysis is critical, illustrated by real-world examples from my work with aircraft documentation.  
  1. Data Visualization: Letting the Lines Speak
The human brain is not wired to spot anomalies within rows of dozens of numbers. However, it is highly efficient at recognizing shapes and patterns. A simple graph transforms abstract data into a clear story. You instantly see lines going up, dipping down, or flattening out. The Aircraft Weighting Report Case I recently reviewed a weighting report for a specific aircraft and immediately suspected an error. Five years ago, this aircraft and its sister ship shared nearly identical data. Now, their figures sat at completely different levels.
  • The Initial Response: I notified the relevant team. They claimed everything was correct.

  1. Reverse Calculations: Trust, but Verify
The second pillar of deep analysis is backward calculation, or reverse engineering. When you receive a finished report, you cannot simply trust the final output. You must test the formulas. The Corrupted Spreadsheet Case A few years ago, I was tasked with checking the documentation of a certain aircraft. The figures looked wrong to me, so I requested a recalculation. The other side replied via email that everything was perfectly fine. Instead of accepting their word, I chose to audit the math:
  1. I calculated the data from front to back.
  2. I reversed the process, calculating from back to front.
  3. I compared the two results.
The forward and backward calculations did not match. I sent my findings to the team, prompting a detailed internal check on their end. They discovered that their spreadsheet was corrupted in one specific cell, which had invalidated the entire report. These habits quickly expose mistakes hidden within dozens of digits, formulas, and cells. In aviation, catching these errors does more than just fix a spreadsheet—it directly ensures safer flying.
